I’m excited about the “Reinvented Vintage” sign I picked up at the Caring Transitions sale last weekend. I have admired the sign since I first saw it at Reinvented Vintage and had to have it once I saw it. I wish I could say I picked it up, brought it home, and everything went honky dory, but that was hardly the case!
When I found out the sign is 20′ long and that I couldn’t easily cut it in half because of wiring, I called UHaul only to find out they don’t rent 20′ flatbed trailers. I resorted to borrowing the great old trailer in the photo. I took my boys to my parents’ and spent the night so I could get up early the next day to go on my adventure. Last Friday as I was driving along Hwy 167/67 (the bumpiest road ever), admiring the amazing weather and how well the trailer was pulling, I felt a hard jerk and saw the trailer start jumping around in my side mirror. In an instant I realized the trailer had jumped off the hitch, but was still attached to my truck by the safety chain. I tapped the brakes knowing the trailer was about to slam into the back of my truck. The trailer wedged itself under my bumper and pushed me from one side of the road to the other 3-4 times before I finally came to a stop in the fast lane. I realized my truck couldn’t move so the first thing I did was brace myself to be hit by a vehicle. When moments passed and nothing happened, I knew I had to act fast to get off the Interstate. I assessed my situation and decided I could jack up my truck and push the trailer out from under my bumper. Cars stopped behind me and a man and his teenage son walked up, but quickly told me they couldn’t help me and they left. Then a guy named Dustin pulled up and asked if I’d like to use his floor jack instead of my joke-of-a-jack bottle jack. In no time we had the trailer pulled out and I had to give him a high-five even though we’re in covid-times. The trailer-coupler lever (which locks around the ball of the hitch) was nowhere to be found so I couldn’t just hook the trailer back up and be on my way. Dustin cleverly used ratchet straps to secure the trailer coupler to my hitch so I could pull the trailer off the interstate. He followed me to a gas station at the next exit and I gave him some money for his help and he lit up like a Christmas tree. He had saved the day and expected nothing for it. I very slowly drove on back roads back to my parents’. The trailer was fixed with a $15 part and I left out Saturday with my dad and we got the sign and returned home with no issues. That $15 part was what failed me on the incredibly bumpy 167/67 and I know I’m super blessed I didn’t get hurt. I really appreciate Aleda and crew of Caring Transitions of Little Rock for being patient with me through the whole thing. And also Mark and Nicky Hobby because I bought some Transformers for Little Caleb from their online auction and wasn’t able to pick them up during pickup time. I probably won’t have the sign show-ready be next weekend’s Bella Rustina, but I can’t wait to use it to decorate future shows.
Y’all know I always tell the good, bad, and the ugly because it just wouldn’t be right for me to act like everything’s perfect all the time. Perfect is boring anyway. 🙂
We’ve got some great sales to look forward to this weekend. Here’s what I know:
