I’ve had a pretty good run on finding good “junk” the past few weeks. Last week was exceptional as I got the opportunity to purchase some great vintage concrete statues.

I had an appointment in Conway last Thursday and while I was supposed to be getting ready, I browsed Facebook Marketplace. The owner of these pieces sells estate items to raise money for hospice. She had gotten these pieces from an elderly artist in Judsonia and listed a few pieces on Facebook with pickup in Conway. I was fortunate to be one of the first people to shop. I mention artist because the guy decided at some point to paint just about every piece. Any statue with eyes got baby blue eyeballs painted on.

The statues are still fantastic, but I want to figure out a way to get the paint off without ruining their amazing patina. If you’ve removed paint from old concrete statues before, please let me know what worked (or didn’t work). If I find a way that works, I’ll be sure to share.
My favorite pieces that I plan to keep for myself are this bird bath and planter:

I’ve always wanted some great concrete for my yard and I’m excited to have finally found some. The pieces I don’t keep will be given as gifts (My mother-in-law got a squirrel statue, my buddy Robin gets the mushroom statues, and I have to pick one out to give my mom) or will be at the July 16-18 Bella Rustina.
The estate sales look great for this weekend. I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Here are the sales I know about:
