Upcoming Estate Sales and Auctions for June 17 – 20

Have you ever noticed bid boxes at estate sales and wondered how leaving bids works? I was visiting my parents last weekend in Searcy and we went to lunch after church and I remembered V Smith had an estate sale going on. The house was practically cleaned out, but a couple groupings of pottery caught my eye. The sale had two hours left and I got the bright idea to leave a bid on the leftover 14 pieces of pottery made by Abingdon, McCoy, Camark, Haegar, and more companies as well as the calla lily vase that I liked but couldn’t tell what it was made of (I now think it is glass or ceramic). I didn’t lowball my bid, but I did offer what I thought would be a good price for resale of the pieces. I received a text right before the sale closed letting me know they accepted my bid.

I also picked up the 1980 GOP elephant made by Frankoma when I went back for a dollar less than half price.
A tip for leaving bids when you really want something is to leave a bid higher than half price before the 50% off sale day. This is a common practice so you want to leave a bid more than a couple dollars over half price to make sure you outbid others who may be placing a bid on the same item. Most estate sale agents check bids daily, so it’s a win-win if you bid higher than the 50% off price because the estate sale agent brings in more money for their client and you don’t have the stress of getting to the sale early and fighting the crowd to make sure you get the item you want. Many times estate sale agents won’t entertain offers much less than 50%, so I wouldn’t suggest lowballing an offer if you’re really interested in something. In my case I was visiting close to the end of the sale, so I decided to leave a bid as a bundle deal, which I think helped my situation. I love the pottery I got; Now I have to figure out where to put it!

We have a bunch of sales this weekend. Hope all you dads out there have a wonderful Father’s Day! Here are the sales I know about:
