I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Ours wasn’t anything eventful, but it’s always enjoyable to get together with family and eat great food. Now it’s time for that super busy time of year of events, parties, gift-buying, plus getting ready for the January 13-14 Antique Alley Arkansas AND trying to pull off something huge for the Spring Bella Rustina.
I had no idea I’d be starting something when I brought that Okta puzzle to my parents’ house after my adventure to Tennessee to buy tobacco baskets at a show back in September. I had never seen an octagonal-shaped puzzle before and I was further intrigued by the tropical fish theme, so I bought it. Something I don’t think I’ve mentioned before is that after graduating high school, I bought a small pet shop’s fish aquarium setup and proceeded to have a “fish room” in my parents’ house. At one time I had 38 aquariums of all sizes and I raised everything from guppies to angelfish and sold them in the paper and to the local pet shop. Of course my parents didn’t think that “job” would look very good on my resume out of college, so they encouraged me to get a “real” job. In fact, I had a hard time getting a part-time job during college with my tropical fish “business” because I was so nerdy about it during interviews. Thank goodness I went to school with the Hallmark owners’ daughter, so they overlooked my nerdiness and hired me. Anyway, so since September my parents have been constantly working on puzzles. They’ll finish one and then buy another, but maybe only one of the new ones has been as challenging as the vintage (1960s) Springbok Okta-puzzle, so I’ve been on the lookout for more. Apparently they are scarce in the wild and kinda expensive on eBay, but there are some awesome designs! If you’re into puzzles or need a gift for someone who is, I’d definitely suggest looking them up.
There are some good looking sales this weekend. I’ve been trying to keep up with all the shop open houses, but I know I always miss some. I do know Kiehl Avenue Flea Market located at 902 E. Kiehl Avenue in Sherwood has their open house this Saturday from 10AM to 5PM. They will have 20% off everything store-wide except items marked “firm”. They will also serve desserts and have gift certificate giveaways. Since many of the estate sales are in that direction, you might have some time to go by and support some local vendors as well. Here are the sales I know about for this weekend:
