These days it seems the crazy, off-the-wall things happen to me on Wednesday when I need to be working on the weekly email. Last Wednesday it was that crazy storm and this week it was a bat. Yes, a bat somehow got into my house. I had just sat down to begin working on the email with my back turned to Big Caleb and the boys when I heard Big Caleb jump up from his chair and begin yelling something about a bat. I turned around just in time to see the animal glide gracefully across the room and take the corner into the foyer toward our stairs. At this point both Calebs had gone ballistic and little Joshua was running around wondering what emotion he should be displaying. With all the racket I couldn’t tell where the bat had gone, so I had to shush the Caleb’s so I could listen for the bat. I could hear it rustling upstairs so I made my way up and followed the noise into the boys’ bathroom. The bat had crash-landed into a toy bucket. I covered the bucket with a paper towel and brought it downstairs. The bat was feisty so I’m thrilled it more or less caught itself, because otherwise I would have had to get after it with a towel or something to protect myself from getting bitten. Once we went outside to let it go, Big Caleb decided to get an unflattering video of our chaos and post it online. The video has everything from Joshua loudly passing gas to Big Caleb fretting about bugs to the bat beautifully taking off from the bucket. You can click here to see us in action. If you are interested in a chance to win the grain bin set I posted about last week, $20 in Bella Bucks to Bella Rustina, plus two admission tickets to the vintage market, I am hosting a giveaway on the Bella Rustina Facebook Page. Property will be for sale after Estate Sale. We will be liquidating the estate of the late Charlie Brown and the late Dr. Loreta Holder- Brown. After a life threatening bout with Polio at the age of 4, and subsequent loss of the use of her left arm inspired in Loreta a lifelong commitment to improving the lives of children with disabilities. At the age of only 16 she was awarded a teachers certificate and begin teaching elementary school in Springfield Public School. She went on to attend Arkansas State Teachers College (Now UCA) in Conway, Arkansas earning her Bachelors Degree in Education, then her Masters Degree in Special Education from George Peabody College in Memphis, Tennessee, and finally her Doctorate of Education Psychology from Southern Illinois University, and became Professor Emerita of Special Education at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1973. In 1975 she met her lifelong partner and future husband, Charlie Brown, and together they built a life benefiting countless children, as well as the communities in which they lived. Recognizing the importance of early intervention, in 1974 Dr. Holder-Brown founded the Innovative RISE Center at the University of Alabama, one of only a handful of experimental programs to win federal grant moneys to provide crucial therapies to special needs infants and support services to their families. RISE has since grown to seven facilities based in major U.S. cities in four states and provides hundreds of children with vital services yearly. Enabling them to flourish and enabling them to enter classrooms all over the U.S. Dr. Holder-Brown changed dozens of lives through her doctoral program, and hundreds more through her tiny infant day-school program started in a basement, conceived and directed by her, and funded by grants that she wrote! In 1993, after her retirement from University of Alabama, she returned to her Alma Mater, Now UCA, where she taught early childhood development and special education. As Dr. Holder-Brown was considering a second retirement she and Charlie Brown founded Mission HELP as an outreach support program for orphanages and neonatal intensive care unit and established and funded programs to train childcare providers to treat physically disabled children in Honduras. RISE Schools of Tuscaloosa, Austin, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Huntsville and Stillwater and Mission HELP of Honduras (now a part of the Friends of Barnabas outreach) stand as a testament to the heart of Dr. Holder-Brown had for children and the tenacity with which she pursued her vision. In her travels she collected MANY unique items, and this sale is ever growing and changing as we unpack and discover what all had been packed away for safe keeping throughout her life.
