Next year’s spring Bella Rustina is on the total solar eclipse weekend, April 5-8. I intentionally booked that weekend in hopes of a successful weekend. I will keep the Conway Expo Center through Monday, April 8 (eclipse day), and plan to allow exhibitors to have the extra day to sell before and after the eclipse. Thousands (some are predicting millions) of people are expected to flock to central Arkansas to see the only total solar eclipse in the area in our lifetime.
I was invited by a friend to attend a solar eclipse expo last weekend in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She is the director of economic development in Cabot. Alicia, along with Cabot’s fire and police chiefs, attended the Expo to learn about public safety and how their city can prepare for the eclipse. I attended to gain insight on how to manage large crowds, public safety, and marketing ideas. Unfortunately the Expo was a bust as they focused on the science behind the eclipse and their “safety class” only gave information about eclipse glasses. I did meet a representative for an eclipse glasses manufacturer based in Little Rock, which was neat. One scientist got extremely excited when he noticed Cabot, Arkansas will see a “Double-Diamond Ring” towards the end of the eclipse when the moon’s valleys allow sunlight to shine through and look like a ring with two diamonds (Google it – It’s pretty cool!).
Cape Girardeau is not a large city, but their restaurants are on-point. I had some of the best food ever last weekend. After the solar eclipse classes, Alicia and I visited antique malls in the area and had a blast. I was able to add to my crewel art collection.
One shop had letterpress posters of the “You are my sunshine” mural in downtown Cape Girardeau. We found lots of other great murals and old buildings to appreciate.
On the way back home we looked up estate sales and found a bunch in Memphis so we took a detour. I fell in love with the Max Moreau art below. It is a large piece and I paid more than I usually invest in artwork, but it is worth over double what I paid. I’ll eventually finish redoing my living room and will show y’all my fun mid-century art I’ve collected over the years.
At another estate sale I couldn’t resist this hand-painted art below. The colors are fantastic! The photo doesn’t do this justice.
I look forward to displaying these in my home. My goal is to paint most of the rooms in my home before hanging these. The boys have truly left their mark in every room in one way or another over the years and it’s time to freshen everything up. I’m not sure when I’ll have time to paint, but I only lack one more coat of paint in the living room, so it’s a start.
