Two of my favorite people have birthdays next week. My mom’s birthday is on Monday and Little Caleb’s is next Wednesday. We’ve all been asking Little Caleb what he wants for his birthday and each time he says he wants a turtle or a frog. Growing up I had just about every pet in the book from bugs to iguanas, but I’m just not feeling a pet for a four year old because we all know I’ll be the one taking care of it. My parents still have the descendants of some of the fish I raised when I had a fish room complete with over 30 aquariums during college (I raised tropical fish and sold them by listing them in the newspaper). I remember the nightmares of chasing down a lose hamster in the middle of the night and how quickly they reproduce. My fairly-large iguana escaped our screened-in porch one summer and we found him run over on Highway 36 around a mile from our house. I have to admit the memories make me smile. Big Caleb is all about getting Little Caleb a pet and has been for a while, but I think I’m going to push back for another year because I’m still getting used to taking care of everyone plus Joshua.
